The Tragedy of Pets in the Media
One of the most anticipated children's movies of the year is the release
of Disney's 102 Dalmatians, the sequel to the popular live-action
101 Dalmatians.
If it's anything at all like the first, you'll be treated to scenes of
adorable dalmatian puppies performing cute little puppy-antics. These cuddly
little creatures crept their way into the hearts of moviegoers everywhere.
Unfortunately, the effects of the movie were also felt in humane
societies and rescue organizations. Moviegoers, in love with the
dalmatian pups portrayed in the movie, rushed out and got one of their
very own. Then when they realized that the daily reality of caring for
the challenging dalmatian was nothing like the portrayal in the movie,
these poor animals were surrendered to shelters.
You can view statistics on the
sad results of 101 Dalmatians here ... and I can tell you, from personal
experience volunteering at a shelter, that it's absolutely true: for a period
there were always dalmatians at the shelter, and usually several of them at
one time. It's heartbreaking.
Although the antics of the dalmatian pups in the new 102 Dalmatians
may capture your heart, please don't go out and buy one. Consult with your
local animal shelter and reputable breeders to research the breed first:
they come with a number of challenges, and adopting one should be a lifelong
commitment.
